
D. Robert Franz has been a full time professional wildlife photographers for over 20 years. With formal training in wildlife management and geology he has extensive knowledge of the natural world. His photography has been extensively published worldwide. His images have been featured in , Audubon Magazine, National Wildlife, Sierra Magazine, Defenders Magazine, National Geographic, Das Tier Magazine, Sports Afield, Field and Stream, and many more. The workshop will be a combination of both photography in the field and indoor classroom teaching. Digital SLR cameras are preferred for the ease of reviewing the day’s images which greatly enhances the learning process. A telephoto lens is and tripod is highly recommended. Your laptop computer with imaging software would also be useful.
Field sessions will begin early, before sunrise, taking advantage of the sweet light and again in the late afternoon. There will be many photographic opportunities from wildlife and birds photographed from blinds, to scenic and macro images found by exploring the ranch on foot. While in the field Robert will attempt teach composition and form, lighting, exposure, how to approach and effectively photograph wildlife, background control, and natural history.
Classroom instruction will take place during the mid-day. Please bring examples of your existing work if you would like Robert to critique it. During classroom instruction Robert will cover exposure, composition and form, photographic equipment, nature photography ethics, lighting, in order to reinforce field instruction. Robert will tell you his secrets for creating artistic nature images that stand out from the rest. Afternoons will also be used to examine images taken during the field sessions which will be a great teaching tool.
