Larry's Bio

Larry Ditto has been a nature photographer for over 30 years.  Formally trained as a wildlife biologist, and having a background as a manager in the National Wildlife Refuge system, he has a combination of knowledge and experience that is hard to find.

Larry’s photographs have appeared in National Geographic books, Field & Stream, Natural History, Sports Afield and other magazines for many years.  Additionally, Audubon Calendars, Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine, National Wildlife, and Texas Highways magazines regularly feature his work.

In 2000, Larry and his teammate, Greg Lasley took first place in the Valley Land Fund Photo Contest.

His work is also prominently displayed in the book, Texas Wildlife Portfolio.

When not shooting, Larry teaches photography workshops, judges photography contests and is a consultant to landowners on wildlife photography.

Workshop Description

The seminar will be a combination of field and indoor work.  For the field, bring all your photography gear, but don't worry if you don't have all those nice things the pros use...you will need a SLR camera and telephoto lens. A tripod is also highly recommended. If you are shooting digitally, please don't forget to bring your laptop computer, imaging software (photoshop CS3 is ideal) and other photo storage devices.

Early morning, from before sunrise to mid-morning, and late afternoon the group will photograph in the field. There will be many photography opportunities. Students will have the option of photographing from the photo-blinds or walk the different areas of the ranch with Larry.  If we are able to get a snake, lizard or other critter that can be controlled, everyone will have a chance to work it.  The staff will handle any critters...all you have to do is shoot.  We will keep the groups small enough to give everybody a good photo opportunity.  Part of our field work will focus on showing you how to: prepare blinds and "sets" with water, feed and perches for birds and other wildlife; how to plan for lighting, wind and other environmental factors that affect your photography success.  It's a lot of fun and you will be amazed at what you hadn't considered before, when taking wildlife photographs.

During mid-day, we will be indoors in a comfortable setting to discuss photo composition, lighting, and how to make your photographs "rise above the ordinary".  Capturing, processing and storing digital images will be a significant part of our indoor discussions, too.   I want to make sure we address your questions and issues, so jot down a few notes before you arrive.  We will have the flexibility to cover a variety of topics and class discussion will be strongly encouraged. Afternoons will also be used to review images taken during field work. This can be done anonymously, if preferred.

The best part of these seminars is what we learn from the group during our discussions at mealtime and after each day's shoot.  So, each day will be dynamic to incorporate as much as possible while having great fun.  After the seminar, I'm always available by phone or email to answer questions, review your photos or just discuss photography.

Larry will be starting a newsletter or blog in the next couple of weeks and everyone in the group will have the opportunity to sign up to receive it.  He will happily post some of your images.
